About
Research on Schistosomiasis or Bilharzia, a parasitic disease caused by a digean trematode fluke. The parasitic disease is estimated to affect over 207 million people, 85 % of which live in Africa. There are two major forms of the disease which depend on the species of the infecting Schistosoma fluke; Intestinal Schistosomiasis and Urogenital schistosomiasis. There is a simple drug called Praziquantel used to treat both forms of Schistosomiasis. It is relatively cheap unfortunately the majority of people affected by the disease can not afford this treatment and rely on funded Control Programs. Currently I am working on Schistosome Population Genetics and Snail projects for the Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation (SCORE).
